 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Tuesday, Fifth Week of Easter

Our Father in heaven…hallowed be Thy name.  Almighty God, your name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also.  May your Word be taught in its truth and purity, and may we as your children, lead holy lives according to it.  Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven.  Protect us from those who teach or live contrary to your Word or who profane your name among us.  We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen

Dear friends,

In this COVID stay-at-home time, many people are turning to multiple media outlets to be entertained; whether they are trying to find news worthy of watching, clever YouTube videos, engaging video games, interesting TV shows, or Block Buster movies.  I myself have surfed channels looking for something decent to watch when I’m not doing home projects or working on something for the church.

But have you noticed that there is a lot of questionable material available to consumers? Depending on your media package there is anything from G-rated old movie classics to MA-rated occultic horror flicks.  Whether you look on YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Cable, Direct TV and more, all of them have the potential to pipe the world’s best and the world’s worst directly into our living rooms.

Is this good for our soul?

The more I notice how many more Mature Audience (MA) shows are appearing as options for our viewing pleasure, the more I’m praying to God that we will avoid the temptations that this world brings to us, and instead, seek God and his Word.  The apostle Paul writes that in view of God’s mercy for saving us from the corruption of our sin, and from the ravages of death, and the destructive forces of the devil, by means of his Son, Jesus Christ, that we are not to “conform to the pattern of this world.”  Instead we are to be “transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

How do we do this?

The mind is the window to our heart and soul.  Fill it with good things.  Paul says, “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8-9)  God has given us the freedom in Christ to choose the good rather than the evil or the questionable.

The best thing to occupy our minds with when we have time is the Word of God and prayer.  In a very real sense, God’s Word is for General Audiences and Mature Audiences, and everything in between.  May you and your family be filled with the best God has given you.
